RESOLVE TO BE FINANCIALLY WISER THIS YEAR

December 31, 2006 By: Credit Dunce Category: Financial Planning, Financial Goals, Personal Finance, Contributors No Comments →

Along with losing weight or quitting smoking or whatever it is you resolve to do this upcoming year, why not resolve to reach a financial goal as well? Get out of debt. Make all your payments on time. Make and stick to a budget. Earn more. Save more. Spend less. Clean up your credit report. Pay for everything in cash.

Personally, I have resolved to do all of the above. I also set a short term savings goal because ultimately I would like to have my credit report cleaned up to the point where I would actually qualify for a mortgage and I would also like to have enough money saved for a down payment. For me, these are pretty ambitious goals, but I am confident I am on the right track.

Whatever your resolutions are, good luck and I hope you stick to them.

SCREWUP RESULTS IN THOUSANDS OF POTENTIAL IDENTITY THEFT VICTIMS

December 31, 2006 By: Credit Dunce Category: Identity Fraud, Personal Privacy, ID Theft, Identity Theft Prevention, Identity Theft, Identity Theft, Contributors No Comments →

A careless mistake has put several thousand Wisconsin residents at risk for identity theft. The state of Wisconsin recently mailed out state tax booklets with the social security number of the recipient printed right on the mailing labels. As many as 170,000 taxpayers could be impacted. The mistake has been blamed on a computer programming error at a printing company hired by the state. The state Department of Revenue has issued an apology and the U.S. Postal Service has agreed to retrieve any misprinted booklets not yet delivered. More info on this story is available here. The level of negligence displayed by the state in this case is discouraging to those of us who go to great lengths to protect ourselves from identity theft.

CREDIT DISPUTE LETTERS

December 30, 2006 By: Credit Dunce Category: Credit Reports, Dispute Letters, Inaccurate Credit Reports, Credit Reporting Agencies, Credit Report Dispute, Credit Repair, Credit Bureaus, Contributors No Comments →

With the holiday season in full swing, I have been very busy both at work and at home. Amidst the shopping, travel and time well spent with friends and family, I did manage to find a spare hour or two to get a credit report dispute letter written and sent to one of the credit bureaus.

In the course of reviewing and highlighting items on my credit report I felt were inaccurate, I also prioritized them. As I have mentioned in prior posts, one credit bureau is currently reporting two delinquent credit card accounts issued by a bank with whom I most definitely did not have two credit cards at any time. I have made getting this cleared up my top priority.

The body of the letter I sent is below with the details specific to my situation removed.

I recently obtained a copy of my credit report and have discovered that it contains inaccurate information. Enclosed please find a copy of my credit report with the inaccurate data highlighted in yellow.

The following information is incorrect:

(INACCURATE ITEM HERE). This is not accurate because (REASON ITEM IS INACCURATE).

Please investigate this matter with (NAME OF CREDITOR) and delete this inaccurate item from my credit report.

Thank you in advance for your prompt attention to this matter.

Obviously, I enclosed a copy of my report with the item I am disputing highlighted. My name and social security number are on the actual letter as well.

Hopefully, this dispute letter will achieve the desired result and the incorrect negative item will be removed from my credit history quickly. I still have some additional letters to write to the credit reporting agencies and once I do I will post more snippets. I will also post results once I hear back from the credit bureaus.
